The Role of Professionalism and Empathy in Interpretation

As interpreters, our role goes far beyond simply converting words from one language to another. We are the bridge that connects individuals with essential services, often in moments of vulnerability. Today, I was reminded of the profound impact we can have on the lives of those we assist.

I received a call today and the Limited English Proficient (LEP) patient recognized me from previous appointments. She shared something that warmed my heart, every time she had an appointment, she wished and prayed that I would be the one appearing on the screen to interpret for her. It was a moment of gratitude that reinforced the importance of what we do.

However, that gratitude was accompanied by disappointment. She also shared a distressing experience from a recent medical visit where another interpreter had been rude to her. This LEP was under immense stress, as doctors suspected she might have cancer, though further tests were needed to confirm it. With that heavy burden on her mind, she struggled to pronounce the name of a medication when asked by the doctor. Instead of offering understanding, the interpreter rudely corrected her pronunciation. The LEP, feeling embarrassed, apologized, stating that if she knew English, she wouldn’t need an interpreter in the first place. That interaction left her in tears when she arrived home.

This story serves as a crucial reminder, our job is not just about linguistic accuracy; it is about treating every individual with dignity and respect. A patient already facing an overwhelming medical diagnosis should not have to worry about being judged or humiliated by the very person who is supposed to facilitate understanding.

Professionalism and empathy should always go hand in hand. An interpreter’s role is to create a safe space where LEP individuals feel heard and respected. Mispronunciations and language barriers are precisely why our profession exists. Instead of criticism, we should offer patience, understanding, and support.

To any LEP who encounters an unprofessional interpreter, I encourage you to report the behavior immediately. No one deserves to be treated with disrespect, especially in vulnerable situations like medical appointments.

To my fellow interpreters, let’s hold ourselves to the highest standards of professionalism. Our words and attitudes carry weight. A single interaction can either uplift someone or leave them feeling defeated. Let’s ensure that we always choose the former.

Empathy costs nothing but means everything.

    • Thanks Steve, yes. We all have a role to play. No matter how bad things become in a job, we remain professional regardless. Like doctors and nurses, they are saving lives and get disrespected at times too, but doesn’t mean we don’t remain composed and professional.
